After the document is recovered by using the "Recover Text from Any File" converter, there is some binary data text that is not converted. This text is primarily at the start and end of the document. You must delete this binary data text before you save the file as a Word document.
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack makes files created with Office 2007 and later work seamlessly on earlier versions of Office. MS, that is all there is to creating .pdf files from both .doc and .docx files. I recommend you put your two weeks of free time to good use, such as with scuba diving or wood working. Or perhaps you could learn how to make the perfect croque monsieur, travel to Paris, and meet the person of your dreams. Or not. See you tomorrow. Same bat time, same bat channel.
To those who are still suffering from the problem, you must have noticed that when you right click on the desktop or windows explorer and point to New, there's no Microsoft Word Document option. First you need to correct this. Please follow the steps mentioned here in the answer by Tony : -us/windows/forum/windows_vista-files/right-click-menu-in-explorer-desktop-missing-new/f0244fe4-216b-459c-b48f-a3d0396b6b11?tm=1321295233864
I am also having this issue and have tried ALL of the suggestions mentioned in this thread to no avail. This started - for me - after an upgrade on my work PC (running Windows 7 Pro) from Office 2013 to Office 2016 via Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus. The only icons to be effected are the .docx, .doc, .pptx, and .xlsx file icons. These iconsshow as a generic icon but are all pointed to the correct default program and OPEN with the correct default program. Files saved as an older version type (with the exception of the .doc file type) all display with the correct icons and open with the correct default program. While everything works as it should it IS annoying to have this generic icon displayed without at least an understanding of WHY, let alone the ability to repair it ... frustrating.
